Top Hurricane Tips Regarding Transportation

  • When an evacuation is ordered, Broward County Transit (BCT) buses cease regular service and begin running emergency/evacuation service. Evacuation service will coincide with the opening of American Red Cross shelters. It will not begin before shelters are open.
  • In the case of a Category 1 or 2 hurricane (Evacuation Plan A), buses will pick up along A1A. In a Category 3 or higher (Evacuation Plan B), bus pick-up points will include A1A and Federal Highway. There are designated pick-up points where buses will lay over longer to take evacuees.
  • For BCT evacuation pick-up points for transportation to Red Cross shelters for tourist and residents without transportation, call the Hurricane Hotline at 954-831-4000 or vist the Broward County Transit web site at www.broward.org/bct.
  • Pick-up points are generally located along A1A on the beaches, and/or Federal Highway in a Category 3 or higher. Those evacuating from these areas can flag down any BCT bus for pick-up. All buses will be marked "Emergency Evacuation" on the head sign. Evacuation service will continue as long as weather permits.
  • Broward County Transit Paratransit Services section coordinates transportation of persons with disabilities to and from shelters. Pre-registration is required. Call Broward County Elderly and Veteran's Services at 954-537-2888 (TDY 954-537-2882).
  • As a storm approaches, Paratransit Services will contact all registered special needs residents to arrange for a pickup time and transportation to the appropriate special needs shelter, or to call a taxicab company that can provide wheelchair/special needs service. If you are registered and your transportation has not arrived within the specified time, please call the Hurricane Hotline at 954-831-4000.

Returning Home

  • A reverse evacuation will be conducted. This means you will be returned to your original pick-up point, but only after the “All Clear” is given by the County Administrator.
  • Listen to local radio and television updates for an announcement when normal Broward County Transit bus service will resume.
