Recent
and Historic Disasters Remind Us All to Be Prepared - Disaster
Preparation
(ARA) - From the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and
fire to Hurricane Katrina, natural disasters are startling reminders
that disaster can strike at anytime, with little or no warning,
resulting in millions of dollars of damage. However, a recent survey
by the Insurance Information Network of California and Fireman’s Fund
Insurance Company found that only 22 percent of those surveyed
consider themselves prepared for disasters.
“The recent 1906 earthquake centennial and more current natural
disasters remind us that it is crucial for every home and business to
be adequately prepared,” said Joseph J. Beneducci, president and chief
operating officer of Fireman’s Fund.
To help homeowners and businesses prepare for natural disaster,
Fireman’s Fund has established a Web site, www.firemansfund.com/preparedness,
with advice and tips. The site encourages preparing an emergency plan,
including mapping out and practicing escape routes from your home,
choosing a third party outside the geographic area as a central phone
contact, establishing a place to meet, and knowing where gas and water
shut-off valves are located.
In addition, Fireman’s Fund recommends having an emergency kit to
include the following:
* Extra clothing, including sturdy shoes and work gloves
* Cooking supplies: a small camp stove, plates and utensils
* Food: a large supply of canned and packaged goods
* Manual can opener
* Water: one gallon per person per day
* Adequate foot and water for pets
* First aid kit: include prescription drugs; replace prior to
expiration dates
* Sleeping bags or blankets
* Flashlights
* Portable radio
* Fire extinguisher
* Large trash bags to keep supplies dry (and for trash)
* Liquid detergent, feminine and infant supplies, and toilet paper
* Tools: especially, a large wrench to turn off gas
* Cash
* Homeowners and health insurance policy numbers and phone numbers
Fireman’s Fund is no stranger to disaster – the 1906 San Francisco
earthquake destroyed its headquarters and all of its records. Yet
through innovation and integrity, Fireman’s Fund was able to pay all
of its insurance claims – the only U.S. insurer to do so – and help
rebuild the city of San Francisco.
