Use This Checklist to Prepare for Hurricane Season

How ready are you for hurricane season this year? Staying prepared throughout the Atlantic and Pacific storm season means being ready for high winds, flooding, loss of power, and other effects of a hurricane. Getting storm-ready is a must if you live in any of the areas that are susceptible to hurricane strikes. If you want to make sure you’re ready for a strong storm this year, brush up on hurricane preparedness pointers at ready.gov and use this checklist from HurricaneShuttersForida.com to prepare for hurricane season:

  • *  Sign up for emergency alerts in your area, as recommended on ready.gov. This way, you’ll be notified when a storm is a danger to your community and you can take appropriate action if and when the time comes.
  • *  Know evacuation routes from your home or other building. Know where the nearest shelters are and go over your evacuation plan with your family so that you’re ready in the event of a mandatory evacuation.
  • *  Know where to take shelter in your home if you plan on remaining there during a hurricane. Ready.gov recommends taking shelter in “a small, interior, windowless room” at the lowest level of your building that is safe from rising flood waters.
  • *  Stock up on storm supplies for at least three days, including: water, canned/non-perishable food, batteries, flashlights, and a small radio. Ensure you have enough of any necessary medications and first aid supplies. And don’t forget about your pets – you’ll need at least three days’ worth of food and water for each of your animals too.
  • *  Protect important documents by placing them in waterproof containers and storing them in a safe place.
  • *  Make sure you can protect your windows and doors from high winds, flying debris, breakage, and other storm dangers. Installing strong hurricane shutters on your windows, glass doors, and other building openings allows you to quickly and easily secure these vulnerable areas on your home or commercial building. Hurricane-rated shutters protect against costly wind and water damage and using them can make your building safer during a hurricane.
